HOME FOR FUTURE
A centre for the children and youth of Spitak, Armenia
Joint projekt of YMCA Spitak, Armenia and YMCA Zurich, Switzerland.
Projectdescription
(Summary, December 2007)
The planned new YMCA Child- and Youthcentre in Spitak, Armenia Project description.
Spitak Town suffered strongly in the 1988 earthquake, as it was the closest town to the epicentre. The wounds of this disaster haven’t been healed until this day. The economical situation is still very critical and most of the inhabitants are unemployed. They don’t have any perspectives. Especially children and the young are affected, as there are just very few playgrounds or an almost inexisting infrastructure for child-oriented activities.
Since 1994, YMCA Spitak is serving the whole community. Actually YMCA Spitak is bringing new hope and perspectives to the coming generations, offfering them well-organised programs such as extracurricular non-formal Education (English-&Computerclasses), Childcare, Ten Sing (Youth Choir), Puppettheater, Volunteersclub and a group of Y-Scouts (“Jungschar”). The programs are open for all children and teenagers, no matter what origin they have. Most of the activities are held in an old hut which lacks of space. This hut can’t offer proper circumstances for such activites, but none the less these programs are giving profit, not only to the participants, but to the whole community of Spitak (The YMCA-puppet-theatre for example presents the self-developed pieces regularly in all the public schools of Spitak). Besides YMCA Spitak gives children and teenagers a directed day-structure that supports their personal evolution.
An international partnership with YMCA Zurich, Switzerland, was established in 2000. Within this partnership a big project was developped, which should be realised within the next two years: The Home for Future!
For further development and extension, YMCA Spitak is in need of a new building, which replaces the provisional hut, in which the current programs are held. The bad condition of the provisional hut leads to a big effort to take care of it. Regular repair works have to be taken care of daily and are interfered by the bad building fabric. On top of that, there is a big lack of rooms and space, which hinders the service as well.
A new centre gives YMCA Spitak the possibility, despite the difficult situation in the community, to operate self-supporting and to enlarge the number of beneficiaries, offering its services to the whole region of Spitak. Therefore, our project is an investment that is multiplied for the whole society.
Government, Population and YMCA Spitak see the new building as a symbol and a meeting point for the young generation in Spitak, as an open community centre in the heart of the city. A centre in which not only children and young people, but rather all generations may meet in a sense of intergenerational understanding.
With the support of YMCA Zurich the project was pushed since 2003.The preparation-works were done through a local engineering-office in Armenia, which enabled us to have the necessary papers for the building available. These documents consist not only of the building-technical planning-works but include all necessary certificates and official allowances.
As investment in the future financial autonomy of YMCA Spitak, YMCA Zurich has committed itself to be the main responsible for the whole project “Home for future”. Out of own efforts YMCA Zurich was able to rally about 40% of the project costs since 2003. There is still a decisive lack of finances to realise this project. That‘s why we need further support.
Please help us to realise our project successfully!

Property
In June 2006 YMCA Spitak was able to buy a plot of land containing about 1800m2.

The choice of the location is a result of an evaluation arranged by YMCA Spitak in collaboration with YMCA Zurich. The new property is situated next to the city-park of Spitak and used to be a police-station. In combination with the nearby Multisports-Complex this area, including the new YMCA-Centre, will become a real leisure-zone for the community of Spitak. The town-centre is within walking distance and to be reached within a couple of minutes, either by feet or car. The area can be approached by car without any hindrances.
